Tak Province


Tak is located 426 Kilometers from Bangkok the province covers an area of 16,406 square kilometers and is divided into 8 Amphoes (districts). Muang, Ban Tak, Mae Ramat, Mae Sot, Pho Phra, Sam Ngao, Tha Song Yang and Umphang.


The Communication center of the North, having a Highway passing through Myanmar - Thai border into Thailand. At Mae Sot, Sukhothai, Phitsanulok and towards Northeastern Thailand. Entering Laos at Chong Mek pass, Ubon Ratchatani.


Wat Phra Boromthat


Wat Phra Boromthat is located north of the township area, 25 Kilometers upstream from the Mae Ping River, in the Ban Tak district. This area was the site of the old Tak town. There are several ruins and monasteries in the area and on top of a nearby hill is Wat Phrathat, a pagoda of Phum Khao Binth design.


The Shrine of King Taksin the Great


The Shrine of King Taksin the Great is located at the intersection of Charotwithithong Road and Mahatthai Bamrung Road. Housing a statue of King Taksin the Great which is a little larger than his real human size.


The statue is in the sitting position with a sword lying across his lap. At the base of the statue is an inscription saying Pha Chao Taksin of Krung Thonburi.


The Bhumibol Dam


The Bhumibol Dam is the largest dam in Thailand the curved dam blocks the Mae Ping River at Sam Ngao. Construction started in 1953 it was completed in May 1964. The height, from the rock foundations to the top of the Dam barrier is 245 meters, providing a reservoir capacity of 12,200 million cubic meters.


Bhumibol Dam besides its agricultural benefits and flood prevention. The Dam generates electric power and is popular with tourists for its cruising trips from the dam site.


The boat or raft cruises are made in the upstream area of the lake. From the Bhumibol Dam site to Doi Tao Chiang Mai, the total distance is 140 Kilometers. Boat hire and cruising services can be arranged from the Education Tour Center.


Wat Don Kaeo


Wat Don Kaeo is a temple in which Thailand's biggest and most beautiful Burmese style marble Buddha image is enshrined. The image measures 50 inches from left knee to right knee and 63 inches from base to head top.


The Temple is situated near Kilometer marker 33 along the Mae Sot-Mae Ramat-Tha Song Yang route towards Mae Ramat.


Doi Musur Hill Tribe Development


Doi Musur Hill Tribe Development and Welfare Centre is located on Tak - Mae Sot Highway (No. 105) between Kilometre markers 25-26. Within a short distance after turning, one can see Doi Musur and location of the Hill Tribe Self Help Settlement. The area in which the three hill Tribes, Lahu, Lisu and Meo reside. The centre is an interesting place to visit.


Tawi Chai Land is located on the left of the Tak Mae Sot Road, 500 meters beyond the Shrine of King Khun Samchon's spirit. Tawi Chai Land is a tourist attraction having similar characteristics to the Rose Garden of Nakhon Pathom.


Tak Province Border Districts


Mae Ramat border district is adjoining Myanmar, 120 kilometers from the provincial city Tak. The area has a mountainous topography; Mae Ramat was originally a Karen settlement. It was later inhabited by the migrant Lanna Thai people before being upgraded to an Amphoe.


Tha Song Yang is another border district adjoining Myanmar and stretching along the length of the Moei River. Tha Song Yang covers a mountainous area of the Thanon Thongchai Range. Farming is a main occupation here. The district is about 82 kilometers from Mae Sot and 169 kilometers from the provincial city Tak.


Lan Sang National Park


Lan Sang National Park is an important natural site within Tak District it covers an area of 104 Square Kilometers. Steep rugged mountains, covered in fertile natural forests are the prominent features of the Park. Khao Luang Mountain divides the Park into two, its highest peak, Oomyod, is 1,065 meters above sea level. Lan Sang, is also a historical National park, King Taksin the Great once rested his army in this area during their long march to Chiang Mai.


Higher slopes and mountain watersheds are covered with hill evergreen and hill pine forest. Lower down, the main forest types are mixed deciduous, dry evergreen and dipterocarp forest. The variety of forest habitats provides homes for a rich diversity of wildlife such as barking deer, sambar deer, wild pig, monkey, languor, flying lizard, the rare serow and golden cat.


Khun Phrawo National Park

  

Khun Phrawo National Park covers an approximate area of 220 square kilometers. It includes the Mae Lamao and Mae Ramat National Reserved Forests, Tak Province. The geographical of the National Park consist of virgin forests, which are the sources of streams and rivers.


Wild animals found in the National Park, wild boars, bears, languor, flying squirrel, gibbons, cobra, King Cobra, rabbits, squirrels, tree shrews, red jungle fowls and golden cats.


Mae Moei National Park


Mae Moei National Park belongs to National Park Division, Natural Resources Conservation Office, Royal Forest Department, Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives. It is named Mae Moei after Moei River which is the border between Thailand and Myanmar.


The west part of the park is almost 50 Kilometers, north to south. The Moei River runs from south to north. The park covers about 185 Squares Kilometers, in the Mae U-Su Sub District, Maesong Sub District and Thasongyang District, Tak Province.


Nam Tok Pacharoen National Park


Nam Tok Pacharoen National Park is an approximate area of 855 Square Kilometers, covering the areas of Mae Sod National Conserved Forest in Tambol Daan Mae Lamoh. Tambol Pa Oar, Tambol Pratad Pah Daeng, Tambol Mae Ku, Tambol Mae Tao, Tambol Mahawan of Mae Sod District. Tambol Chong Kaeb, Tambol Phob Phra and Tambol Kirirat in the Phob Phra District, Tak province.


Taksin Maharat National Park


Taksin Maharat National Park is in the Mae Sot District the park is close to Lan Sang National Park and covers an area of 262 Square Kilometers. The park was originally named (Ton Krabak Yai National Park) because of the enormous Krabak Tree (Anisoptera Spp) which grows there. The Royal Forest Department changed the name to Taksin Maharat National Park to honor King Taksin the Great.


Taksin Maharat National Park is approximately 1,000 meters above sea level, with the Thanon Thongchai Mountain Range, the centre the watersheds serve as a boundary line between the Muang Tak District and Mae Sot District. Mae Sot district is the origin of many important brooks. The brooks merge into Heui Mae La Mao in Muang Tak District.

Getting to Tak


By Car, Minibus or Taxi from Bangkok, take Highway No. 1 (Phahonyothin) and Highway No. 32 to Nakhon Sawan via Ayutthaya, Ang Thong, Sing Buri and Chai Nat Provinces. Then take Highway No. 1 again and proceed to Tak via Kamphaeng Phet Province. The total distance is 426 kilometers.


By Bus from Bangkok, VIP Air Conditioned, air conditioned and regular buses depart from the Northern Bus Terminal Bangkok (Mochit 2 Bus Terminal) to Tak from 5:00 am. To 10:00 pm. every day. The journey takes about 6 hours, longer for the regular bus service.


There are many daily private minibus and bus services to Tak from other provinces in Thailand. It’s recommended when touring Thailand to visit some of the various travel agents to find out what’s available.


By Train from Bangkok, no trains go directly to Tak the nearest train transfer station is Phitsanulok. From there you can take a local taxi or minibus to Tak.


Thai Airways International flies from Bangkok to Mae Sot District 86 kilometers from the City of Tak. For more updated information, call 0 2628 2000 or visit website.

Shopping - Eating Out


Tak has several supermarkets, markets, street stalls and 24 hour 7-11 stores. Western food is available from many hotels. There are several restaurants serving western food in the town, as well as an abundance of excellent Thai food, Burmese food and Chinese food.


Leisure - Sport Activities


Tak is an idea city to visit if you decide to explore north Thailand. It’s close to Sukhothai and the Burmese border. Tak province has good golf courses, trekking and rafting opportunities.


Hotels - Accommodation


Tak has plenty of good quality hotels, guesthouses and budget accommodation in the town. On the river banks of the Mae Ping River in a nature setting. There are also resort hotels with excellent leisure facilities situated in the province.
