The vibrant short Khao San road has over the years has developed into probably the most profound worldwide example of a Backpackers Ghetto, with relatively cheap accommodation compared to other areas of central Bangkok.
Today the colorful Khao San road is packed with more than 100 guesthouses, restaurants, various business centers, travel agencies, pubs and bars, plus hundreds of roadside vendors. Many visitors take advantage of the relatively cheap travel agents to arrange visas and transport to Thailand’s neighboring countries, such as Burma, Cambodia, Laos and Malaysia, and Vietnam. |

Those of you that are thinking of a long backpacking vacation, touring Thailand, there are many scams involving cheap travel. It is advisable to book all travel services in Thailand direct or through TAT registered travel agents.
Transport services throughout Thailand provide visitors with many different travel options, and are an efficient means of travel to all destinations. The VIP overnight air conditioned buses is a popular choice for many backpackers, saving the cost of a night’s accommodation. Other popular choices are the combined bus and ferry or train and ferry travel to Thailand’s islands. Tickets can be purchased direct or from TAT registered travel agents.
Budget accommodation can be found throughout Thailand, prices start from as little as a 100 Baht a night for a basic fan cooled room. Island beach huts from around 100-200 Baht. Unless you have pre-booked it’s always best to get to your destination first, even if it means staying one night in a hotel.
On public holidays and long weekends at major tourist destinations, low cost accommodation and budget hotels can be overbooked and prices can double. It’s worth taking note of Thailand’s public holidays before traveling to a new location.
